René Magritte and the pictorial tradition of popular dreambooks

A series of pictures by René Magritte (1898-1967) will be reviewed in the light of popular oneirological chapbooks and the scientific and fictional dream literature of the 19th century. While the neglected traditions are scarcely discussed by art history an interdisciplinary approach leads to a new understanding of content, form and meaning of Magritte's pictures which were composed in the 1920s and 1930s.
